The two co-founders of Amandla Outsourcing, Nomandla Magubane and Amanda Plowman, are a wonderful example of a business started by more than one founder having a higher success rate than one with a solo founder.
“We’ve known each other for a long time so we trust each other. Of course, we also have complementary skills with regard to our business skills – I focus on HR and marketing while Amanda’s strengths lie in finance and training. Together we’ve built a strong business, providing outsourced payroll and HR services,” explained Magubane.
When Plowman’s sister Jodi-Ann Pearton, herself a well-known chef, identified a gap in the culinary and food safety fields and proposed starting a new division to Amandla Outsourcing, both partners were keen on the idea. Fast forward a few months and the team had secured a 200m² unit at Riversands Incubation Hub to set up a beautiful training kitchen with a total of 34 stations, 32 for trainees and two for the instructors.
“We were fortunate to obtain some sponsorship for our set-up, which reduced our financial outlay. We’ve always bootstrapped the finances in the business, preferring to go it alone, which motivates us to seek the most efficient way of accomplishing everything,” said Magubane.
The new division within Amandla Outsourcing will be known as The Food Education Agency. The plan is to start training in earnest in September this year but the International Hotel School heard about the facility and is already sending new trainees for chef training.
“Starting a small business and growing it beyond the early stages is tough. That is where co-founders with complementary skill-sets have an advantage over solo founders. But it does take maturity and a strong mutual respect between business partners to take advantage of the differing views that the different skill-sets bring. It gives me enormous pleasure to see Amandla Outsourcing doing that and to know that our ability to assist them with subsidised rental on a 200m² mini factory was a key un-locker for them to launch their new division and keep growing. Like true entrepreneurs, they have also been quick to take advantage of training and technical services on offer at Riversands as suited to their needs. Our HR Clinic, digital marketing training as well as our VAT registration assistance and related services are examples of services they have found valuable recently. It is this kind of attitude and energy that keeps them flourishing and expanding,” commented Jenny Retief, CEO of Riversands Incubation Hub.
