Entrepreneur Khutsiso Kgole took premises at Riversands Incubation Hub towards the end of last year when his business, KLM High-giene Solutions, had experienced one of its best years of trading since being established in 2013.
“During lockdown, we were classified as an essential service. Of course, being a microbiology service, we knew about taking precautions against contracting Covid!” commented Kgole.
The business counts a number of high profile corporates among its regular clients for both streams of its activities. For food testing and labelling, both food manufacturers and more recently, retailers, regularly engage KLM High-giene Solutions to ensure that products are safe for consumption. “Food labelling stating the nutritional content has also become much stricter in recent years,” explained Kgole.
The other arm of the business provides essential products such as PPE, gloves and sanitizer to a large mining group while also conducting regular environmental monitoring to ensure the cleanliness of facilities including change houses, ablutions, food preparation areas, canteens and offices according to the Department of Mineral Resources guidelines.
The base at Riversands Incubation Hub provides an ideal facility for this ‘Uber’ of microbiology labs.
“While the ideal situation would be to have my own laboratory, I’ve realised that I can form relationships with existing labs and help them sweat their assets. In this way I minimise my costs since I don’t require a large facility with sophisticated equipment,” he said.
KLM High-giene Solutions has four employees, two of whom are qualified microbiologists and an accountant, bringing the team size to five.
While Kgole describes himself as an ‘accidental entrepreneur’, there’s no doubt that he has the will, the grit and the determination to build a thriving business. We wish him every success!
